Got the January Blues? 5 easy ways to boost your motivation in the depth of winter

The festive season is over, family and friends are hunkering down into their own lives, the seasonal spend is showing in the credit card bills and the seasonal overconsumption is evident on the scale. Or are you just having a low energy, low motivation week, or two?

The January blues is a temporary state of low energy and low motivation, distinct from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or clinical depression. It is a real condition though. So here are a few ways to beat the January Blues:

  1. Get out of your routine – Connect with friends, they might need the connection as much as you do, or Get out in nature, enjoy the beauty of snow-covered trees, sunshine, or snowflakes, breathe in the crisp air.
  2. The sleep schedule – it is probably one of the most important aspects of managing your performance on a day-to-day basis. In a recent talk at my TEC-Canada peer group, Dr David Bardsley emphasized the importance of good sleep for longevity and brain health; 8-9 hours, in a cool room, in darkness. And no screen time, low lights to dial into sleep time 30 minutes before bedtime.
  3. Exercise daily – Exercise releases endorphins, which are known to improve mood and energy. Exercising at least 30 minutes each day for five days a week can improve your energy levels and mood. Exercising outdoors is even better as it allows you to breathe in the fresh air, soak up the sun and enjoy nature. And it will deal with the seasonal excess as well.
  4. Eat a balanced diet – In the winter, many of us crave sweets and complex carbohydrates, which can leave us feeling tired. Try to incorporate whole grains and fresh produce into your diet on a daily basis. Try eating foods that are rich in vitamin D such as fish, egg yolks, mushrooms and foods such as milk, juices and cereals that are fortified with vitamin D. Plus – get back to taking supplements regularly.
  5. Prioritize yourself – invest in a new growth program, start working with a coach to maximize your potential or start a new hobby.

Another thought is to complete a project you started, start spring cleaning prematurely. This is all a basic reminder to make self-care a priority.
